CURRICULUM

We are continually trying to develop a broad and balanced curriculum combining both Hifz, Islamic Studies and the National Curriculum requirements. All subjects whether arts or science, academic or recreational are taught ultimately from an Islamic perspective. Islamic aspects are promoted in all areas of the curriculum.

OUR SPECIALITIES

Teaching Methods

We favour whole class teaching but with work differentiated according to the ability of the children, so that the more able child is stretched as well as assistance given to those who are lower achieving. We aim to make our children independent learners and emphasis is placed upon written work of a high standard in both its content and presentation.

Speaking & Listening

It is important that children should develop understanding of the spoken word and learn to express themselves effectively in a variety of speaking and listening activities. Learning situations are organised in order for this to happen in a structured way. We do this using various strategies such as presentations about various subjects and discussions.

OUR COURSES

English Language / Literacy

We believe strongly that sound language development holds the key to success in all areas of learning in the Primary School and in the child’s individual development which depends heavily on the ability to read and speak effectively and to communicate on paper in a clear, legible.

Science

Science plays a major part in the School Curriculum. We aim to encourage children through direct observation and practical investigation to think scientifically and to be able to apply ideas and knowledge to a variety of problems and new situations. The school follows the national QCA programmes of study.

Information Technology

We are committed to the development of I.C.T. at Al-Mizan by trying whenever possible to follow the QCA schemes of work. The children are also encouraged to use the computers for individual research connected with their school studies. We have access to 30 dedicated computers loaded with similar software commonly found in state primary schools.

Handwriting

In the earliest stages, children are taught to form their letters correctly and they will be taught to use joined up scripts.

Mathematics / Numeracy

We largely use the Collins Primary schemes, resources from the internet and our own teacher designed material to deliver the Numeracy Strategy.

Other Subjects

Our curriculum also contains Art, Design and Technology and Drama. Subjects such as Geography and History are taught through ‘Topics’ lessons.
